This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Book Reviews

Full disclosure: Father Albert Haase, the author of this book, is my Spiritual Director.

Saying Yes: Discovering and Responding to God’s Will in Your Life is the latest offering from Albert Haase, OFM, a Franciscan Friar of extraordinary talent in writing and speaking. Father Albert (pronounced “Al Bear”) is a world traveling preacher who gives retreats and missions for churches, priests, spiritual directors, and anybody who needs or wants to be better in their spiritual life. Father Albert’s details can be found on his web site, albertofm.org.

I was in contact with Father Albert almost immediately after his book hit the Number One slot on Amazon’s Hot New Releases for Adult Christian Education list, just at the beginning of the new year. I caught him by email during a break in a retreat he was giving when he told me the news, so I immediately downloaded it to my reader and started in on it. I was done in two and a half days, with less than five hours reading. As a one-eyed reader, that means you can read it quickly, too.

I would call this a lunch book. Take it with you to lunch for five days and you will be done reading it, easily.

But the content and growth gained from reading it will stay with you.

Father Albert has a very personal and personable writing style, which make all his books feel as though you are sitting in the same room with him while he counsels you. And I should know, because I do sit with him every six to eight weeks for spiritual direction.

This book, along with his others, is a constant spiritual direction for you, no matter who you are. I have already recommended it to a friend who is discerning the deaconate as well as my Goddaughter, who is a junior in college. The gist of the book is that it applies to everyone – and that’s a rarity.

The premise, which Father Albert makes sense of simply, is that discernment of God’s will is a lifelong process. The author teaches how God doesn’t just say “do these for the rest of your life” and then leave you hanging. And he also shows how God is constantly telling you what he wants you to do in your current life situation.

While one may have discerned family life, career, ministry and other “do” and “be” parts of one’s life, Father Albert points out that God is continually telling you how to “do” and “be” them even better – or even when it is time to change or grow in other things He wants you to accomplish for Him. And Father Albert shows how and where God is talking to us!

The book oozes with ideas and strategies and tactics on how to listen to God in the myriad ways He communicates with us daily. It sets the stage with a profound, insightful and I believe God-given perspective on the parable of the Judge and The Widow – which I won’t reveal here because YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

Any ManHusbandDad, or anybody who wants to become one, needs this book to help guide them in their spiritual journey to fulfill that calling.

We know we are supposed to be a ManHusbandDad. Father Albert’s book helps us hear how God wants us to BE that and gives us confidence in seeking His Counsel. Truly, God does not deny that which He has ordained, and this book is a critical piece in the spiritual discernment process of not only discovering but pursuing that which God has ordained for you!

Edgerton spends eight fairly short chapters debunking that notion, and it made me wonder why it took eight chapters. It...
